Local Events

Columbian Peanut Company announced plans to build a $1.5 million blanching plant adjacent to the existing building in Ozark.

The H.J. Holman mansion, built in 1912 on Broad Street, was purchased by H.J. Mizell through the Dale County Historical Preservation Authority.

Raymond T. Williams of Ozark became the youngest man to ever be named President of the Alabama Road Builders Association.

The T.G.& Y family center store held their grand opening on March 4, 2002.

Jim's Hub, a men's clothing store owned and operated by Jim Murphy, opened its doors for business.

Raygene M. Burkett, the 53 year old director of Vivian B. Adams School, died of an apparent heart attack at Steagall Park where he was playing basketball.

Robin Epperson was crowned Miss Ozark and Holly Bludsworth was crowned Little Miss Ozark.

John Ball and Kenny Harris were both Valedictorians with each of them having a 4.22 GPA. Sheila Cody was selected Salutatorian with a 4.21 GPA.

262 students graduated from CHS.

Dr. Robert Crosby of Ozark, was name "Optometrist of the Year" at the annual convention in Nashville, TN.

William D. McLaughlin of Ozark graduated from the University of Alabama School of Medicine.

It was announced that Sugar Creek Industries, Inc. would open a textile manufacturing industry in Ozark with a payroll in excess of $2 million annually.

The Wilco Aviation plant was destroyed by fire.

Donna Havrisik was named Miss Ozark and Sarah LeeAnne Kummer was named Little Miss Ozark.

Dr. Samuel Lee Hollobaugh opened an internal medicine office in Ozark.

Hank Williams Jr. appeared at the Ozark Civic Center.

GTE Phone Mart opened there office in Ozark.

CHS band director Rodney Dassinger resigned to accept the position of band director at Rutherford High School in Panama City, Florida.

Eddie Johnson was hired to fill the position of band director.

James Jarmon was named principal of D.A. Smith Middle School.

Pat Sullivan, a former Heisman Trophy winner and former Auburn University quarterback, spoke at an Ozark Quarterback Club meeting.

CHS began offering advanced placement classes in English and History courses.

Mass Merchandisers Inc. began operation in Ozark.

Melanie Brown was named Homecoming Queen.

Three Ozark residents were found dead at 7 a.m. in a one car accident, 14 miles south of Montgomery, on Hwy 231. The victims were Walter White, 47, his wife Jimmy Helen White, 40 and Melvin White, 49. The cause of death was believed to have been carbon monoxide poisoning.

The Lisenby Pee-Wee Rams football team finished the season undefeated.

Ozark City Board of Education filed a lawsuit against the Dale County School Board to settle a dispute over the distribution of ad-valorem tax revenues.

The Hub, closed its doors after 25 years, at the corner of Broad St. and N. Union Ave. Fred Barkett was the General Manager and other employees were Larry Snell, Kenneth Lavender and Dorsey Kelly.

National Events

Actress Natalie Wood drowned in a boating accident off Santa Catalina Island, Calif., at age 43.

The Professional Air Traffic Controllers Organization was decertified by the federal government for its strike the previous August.

U.S. air traffic controllers went on strike, despite a warning from President Reagan they would be fired.

A seven-week strike by major league Baseball ended.

John W. Hinckley Jr. pleaded innocent to charges of attempting to kill President Reagan (he was later acquitted by reason of insanity),

The 52 American hostages being held captive by Iran returned home to the United States after 444 days of captivity.

A fire broke out in the Las Vegas Hilton hotel-casino killing 8 people and injuring 198.

A huge oil drilling rig, the Ocean Ranger, sank off the coast of Newfoundland in a storm, killing 84 men.

Groundbreaking ceremonies took place in Washington D.C. for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

World Events

Authorities in Poland imposed martial law in a crackdown on the Solidarity labor movement. (Martial law formally ended in 1983.)

Turkish extremist Mehmet Ali Agca was sentenced in Rome to life in prison for shooting Pope John Paul II. (However, Agca was pardoned by Italy last month and sent to Turkey, where he will serve time for a killing that took place before the attack on the pope.)

Security guards overpowered a Spanish priest who was trying to reach Pope John Paul II armed with a bayonet in Fatima, Portugal.

Britain's Prince Charles married Lady Diana Spencer at St. Paul's Cathedral in London.

I resided in Ozark for several years, after Graduating from CHS in 82 I moved away and traveled for several years, I currently live in Laguna Niguel, CA still not married, and have no kids, Completed my masters in 2003 . looking to catch up with some old friends, I would love to hear from some of my old class mates. I missed my 20th reunion. If any of you all remember me it would be great to hear from you guys. I am wondering if any one knows how I can find Carmel Corn. I always had a crush on her, but I was to shy back in 1982. I am not sure if she was a class 81-83 ???? I just remeber her as a hotty.
