Here's what was happening in the community, the school, and the world when this class was setting off on their future endeavors.

Local Events

Construction was completed on a new Westview Heights Methodist Church at a cost of $57,000.

A 12 lane bowling alley opened in the Parker Hills subdivision.

Harry N. Mixon, a prominent businessman, died suddenly at Mixon Radio and Refrigeration Company, his place of business.

The inaugural flight for Superior Airways, from Ozark to Atlanta, took 1 hour and 1 minutes. Daily scheduled flights were scheduled to leave Ozark at 7 a.m. and return flights were scheduled for 7 p.m.

Lunch prices were $.30 per day at Ozark City Schools.

A fee of $3.00 per semester per student was added during this school by the Board of Education to offset proration which created a $60,000 shortfall in the budget.

Enrollment in the school system at the beginning of the school year was 2,878 students. There were 712 students in grades 9-12.

Majorettes were Chris McPhaul, Carol Ann Phillips, Pam Wells, and Sallie Patterson.

Sam Y. Carroll, 70, died following an extended illness. He was a widely known businessman and merchant.

Rhonda Hughes, Little Miss Ozark, went on to win the title of Little Miss Peanut Festival in Dothan.

A campaign to start airmail service to Ozark was started by merchants and business people in Ozark. The mail service was going to be run by Superior Airlines which at the time had increased arrival and departures from Ozark to 4 a day.

Carroll High's band performed at Troy State University on homecoming.

Mrs. Nina Carpenter was named teacher of the year at CHS.

Henderson Holman and Chuck Landers were injured in an auto accident on 231 South. Henderson suffered lacerations to the face and head and possible broken ribs, while Landers had a broken leg and lacerations. The accident was caused by the headlights of a car blinding Holman when the oncoming car swerved into Holman's lane.

The Dale County School System took bids on the construction of East Gate School.

The Ozark Dodgers baseball club held an organizational meeting. Ozark operated the club while the L.A. Dodgers furnished the players.

Four men robbed the Oil Well Service Station north of Ozark. They took approximately $200 from the service station.

Superior Airlines sold their company to a business group.

A rumored hepatitis outbreak in Ozark caused the Dale County Medical Officer to publicly deny the rumors. He said that there were only 3 known cases in the county, which wasn't unusual.

Gubernatorial candidate George Wallace came to Ozark to speak to a large crowd.

All local phone numbers were changed to seven digits instead of 2 letters and 5 digit. The phone number PR4-1234 became 774-1234.

It was estimated that 42 Dale County citizens would contract cancer during the year.

Fred W. Flowers and David A. Jackson were gunned down in a bank robbery at The Commercial Bank of Ozark. A 43 year old chiropractor, Dr. Eugene S. Gault, was described by witnesses as a madman and a maniac. Gault was finally killed in Pike County after a long chase. Gault was a practicing chiropractor with no known criminal record. He left notes in his apartment, outlining his plan to rob the bank and a paper outlining 13 steps for a successful bank robbery. Also found in his apartment was evidence that he robbed a bank in Auburn, AL in Dec. 1960.

National Events

Astronaut Scott Carpenter aboard Aurora 7, became the second American to orbit the Earth.

"Enos" the chimp was launched from Cape Canaveral aboard the Mercury-Atlas 5 spacecraft, which orbited Earth twice before returnrung.

The Supreme Court struck down a provision in Maryland s constitution requiring state officeholders to profess a belief in God. 

A U.S. aircraft carrier
carrying Army helicopters arrived in Saigon the first direct American military support for South Vietnam's battle against communist guerrillas.

House Speaker Samuel Rayburn died in Bonham, Texas, having served as speaker since 1940 except for two terms.

Roger Maris of the New York Yankees hit his 6lst home run during a 162-game season, compared to Babe Ruth s 60 home runs during a 154-game season.

Author Ernest Hemingway shot himself to death at his home in Ketchum, Idaho.

A chimp named "Enos" was launched from Cape Canaveral aboard Mercury-Atlas V spacecraft, which orbited the earth twice.

President Eisenhower, in a farewell address, warned against the rise of "the military-industrial complex".

President Kennedy held the first presidential news conference carried live on radio and television.

First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy conducted a televised four hour tour of the White House.

Astronaut John Glenn became the first American to orbit Earth, flying aboard Friendship 7.

Jack Paar hosted NBC's "Tonight" show for the last time.

World Events


The Soviet Party Congress unanimously approved a resolution ordering the removal of Josef Stalin's body from Lenin's tomb.

The Soviet Union tested a hydrogen bomb with a force estimated at 58 megatons. 

Fidel Castro declared himself a Marxist-Leninist and that he would lead Cuba into Communism.

Adolf Eichman, the former Nazi official, was sentenced to death by a court in Israel.

Just a note to say that I really enjoyed the class reunio of days gone by on July 27,28&29. Carroll did a great job getting it together and I think its wonderful to have people like her around, yea Carroll and I mean C. Fowler
